Been on a boat to Staffa and saw many basalt columns, dolphins swimming in our bow, and mountainous islands hazy in the sun. Also, less romantically, the island where Unity Mitford ended her days (Inch Kenneth). Love these islands.

Over the summer, our local wildlife group, Cradley

Over the summer, our local wildlife group, Cradley Wild, joined forces with the village WI to run a campaign ‘Planters for Pollinators’, to celebrate 110 years of the national @womensinstitute It was such a a success that I thought I’d post about it here (plus it was my idea #boast)

We quickly hit the 110 planters target with all the community getting involved, including the Cubs, church and school. Here are some of the planters complete with their recycled wooden signs made by some helpful chap in his garage.

The best thing was that the pollinators did visit our little pots as the last pictures of a Common Carder Bee in a nasturtium, a Gatekeeper butterfly on marjarom and a Brimstone moth on a sweet pea show. Plans are now afoot to do something similar next year…

It’s been a good year for quince (and most other

It’s been a good year for quince (and most other fruit) but as ever the question is what to do with it. Hm. I’ve gone the predictable route and made membrillo. Might also try poaching it with orange blossom water as suggested by @hillyhannken at last week’s yoga class.

Anyway here is its journey from tree to plate. If you are wondering what those purple things are on the plate, they’re pickled damsons. Oh yes, rocking nature’s larder here.

A half hour spent making elderberry rob is half an

A half hour spent making elderberry rob is half an hour well spent. It’s bloody delicious. This year elderberries are a bit scarce due to no rain over the summer and poor old trees suffering but I found a few on the dog walk today. Cooked up with cloves, ginger and sugar they make a warming syrup taken as a cough remedy or as a winter pick-me-up. Also a good non-alcoholic alternative to sloe gin. (Though add a dash of whiskey and the experience deepens further.)

Anyway, the recipe is in my book Elder, published on 16 September, one of six books in the Little Wild Library series published by @verbena_books (A shameless plug but I can’t be bothered to type out the recipe, truth be told.)

It’s pickling and preserving central here. Cucumbers pickled, apples dehydrated, nettle seed stored. Next up tackling the damson and plum glut… The number of apples in the orchard is slightly overwhelming this year, but a good problem to have I suppose.

One for the locals: I have been invited by @malverndowsers to sell my books at their Holistic and Wellbeing Fair today. Here are the books ready for market! It's at Christchurch Hall, Avenue Road, Great Malvern from 11 until 4pm. Many local holistic practitioners will be there too, so it's well worth a visit. £3 entry which includes refreshments.
